
Mustangs Fall, 84-69, in Season Opener to Duquesne

CHICAGO, IL – Senior Jonae Ervin scored 20 points with junior Ariana Elegado adding 19 points, but it would not be enough as Duquesne prevailed, 84-69, in the season opener for both teams at the Maggie Dixon Classic hosted by DePaul University. Cal Poly will play Harvard on Saturday night.
Elegado's points came when she hit eight of 19 shots from the floor and made two of eight from long range. Ervin made five of 14 shots from the floor. Senior Molly Schlemer scored nine points and grabbed a team-high 12 rebounds while redshirt freshman Maddison Allen added nine points, hitting all three of her shots from the floor and three of six at the line. Kristen Ale came off the bench to score eight points while true freshman Hannah Gilbert scored four points in her Mustang debut.
Wumi Agunbiade led Duquesne with 20 points hile Reagan Moore added 19 points. Jose-Ann Johnson tallied three blocks in the win.
The Mustangs shot 34 percent from the floor, but made only four of 15 from long range while Duquesne shot 56 percent from the floor and made six of 12 from beyond the arc. Cal Poly outrebounded Duquesne, 44-34, with 22 coming on the offensive end. Duquesne had six more blocks, 9-3, and forced three more turnovers, 20-17.
Trailing, 4-0, the Mustangs scored their first points of the season on a pair of free throws by Ervin at 17:51 of the first half and came back with 16:56 on the clock to take the lead, 5-4, on a three by Elegado. The teams traded points until Duquesne opened up an eight point lead (28-20) on a three pointer by Orsi Szecsi with 2:37 left in the half. A pair of free throws by Elegado and a layup by Allen cut the lead to two, 28-26, with Duquesne settling for a 29-28 lead at the break.
In the half the Mustangs were led by Ervin's eight points with Elegado adding seven. Allen chipped in with five points and six rebounds while Gilbert came off the bench to add four points. Cal Poly shot 33 percent from the floor, but made only one of nine from long range. Duquesne shot 46 percent from the floor and made two of seven from long range.
The second half opened with Duquesne expanding its lead to six (38-32), three minutes into the half. Kristen Ale connected on a three cutting the lead to 38-35. Cal Poly pulled within on a layup by Allen (41-40) with 14:27 on the clock, but a pair of buckets by Duquesne built the lead to five (45-40). The Mustangs finally tied the game at the 11:48 mark (48-48) on a jumper by Ervin. Duquesne went on a 10-1 run to open up a 58-49 lead with 9:25 left in the half and maintained a nine point lead when the Mustangs made three free throws, two by Schlemer, cutting the lead to 61-57 with 6:29 left in the game. A three by Elegado with 5:18 kept the Mustangs within striking range (69-62) and a free throw and a layup made it a four point game (69-65) with 4:03 left on the clock. A pair of free throws by Ale cut the lead to three (70-69) with 2:26 left in the game. Cal Poly would get no closer with Duquesne closing the game on a 14-0 run.
