
Fresno State Edges Women's Hoop, 79-76

SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. – A layup with :05 seconds left in the game that could have tied the game and into possible overtime, fell short, with Fresno State going on to defeat the Cal Poly women's basketball team 79-76 on Sunday in Mott Gym in front of 1,018 fans.
With the loss the Mustangs fall to 1-2 on the season while Fresno State improves to 2-2. Cal Poly will return to the court on Saturday when the team hosts Austin Peay in the second game of the Cal Poly Thanksgiving Invitational. The tournament will open on Friday with American taking on Austin Peay at 7 pm.
Senior Kristina Santiago scored a game-high 27 points and grabbed a career-high 23 rebounds in the loss. Ashlee Burns added 18 points with Christine Martin coming off the bench to score a career-high 14 points.
Fresno State had four players score in double figures led by Alex Sheedy with 16 points and 10 rebounds while Ki-Ki Moore added 13 points.
In the evenly matched game Cal Poly shot 43 percent from the floor compared to the Bulldogs 42 percent. The Mustangs made 44 percent of their shots from long range while Fresno State made 46 percent.
Cal Poly grabbed 42 rebounds, one more then Fresno State with 41. Each team committed 16 turnovers.
The game saw seven tied scores and 15 lead changes.
With the score tied 76-76 after a made free throw by Martin, Madison Parrish made two free throws with 12 second on the clock to give the Bulldogs a two point advantage.
Cal Poly called a timeout to set up a play. On the inbounds play Burns drove three quarters of the court but her layup with 5 seconds left fell short.
Fresno State opened the game with the hot hand and moved out to a 15-7 lead four minutes into the game. The Mustangs came right back and cut the lead to one, 15-14, on a Santiago layup. Fresno State went right back to work and built a nine point lead (27-18) with 10:46 left in the half.
Cal Poly then went on an 18-8 run over the next six minutes to take the lead, 36-35, on a layup by Burns.
The teams would trade points with the Mustangs holding a 41-40 advantage at the break.
Fresno State held a five point lead (54-49) with 12:06 left in the game but the Mustangs would come right back to take the lead 61-60 on a layup by Jonae Ervin with 8:20 left.
At that point neither team would hold more then a three point advantage the rest of the game. Cal Poly led 66-63 on a Santiago layup, but Fresno State came right back with Moore hitting a three to tie it up.
Cal Poly held a two point lead with 3:53 left in the game (72-70) when Burns connected on a three from the left side.
The Mustangs last lead came with 1:53 left in the game (75-74) on a tip-in by Santiago.
