
Griffin's Double-Double Leads Cal Poly Past Riverside, 57-48

SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. – Sophomore Kayla Griffin recorded her third double-double of the season with 11 points and a career-high 13 rebounds in leading the Cal Poly women's basketball team to a 57-48 Big West Conference win over UC Riverside on Wednesday in Mott Gym. With the win the Mustangs remain unbeaten in conference play at 6-0 and improve to 10-7 overall. UCR falls to 9-8 overall and 3-2 in conference games.
Griffin's points came when she hit five of nine from the floor and one of two from beyond the arc in 34 minutes of play. Fellow sophomore Caroline Reeves led the team with 15 points when she hit six of 12 shots from the floor and three of four from the line.
Junior Ashlee Burns added eight points with Abby Bloetscher and Rachel Clancy each chipping in with seven.
UCR's Brittnay Waddell led all scorers with 16 points while teammate Alyssa Morris added 15.
Cal Poly shot 39 percent from the floor and 50 percent from long range while the Highlanders shot 35 percent and 31 percent.
The Mustangs outrebounded UCR 44-31 but committed two more turnovers, 18-16.
Cal Poly went to the line 14 times and made nine with UCR hitting all six of its shots.
UCR was credited with 10 blocks and 16 steals in the game.
The Mustangs opened the game jumping to a quick 10 point lead (14-4) seven minutes into the game and made it 17 points (26-9) at 7:17 when Burns hit a three from the left side.
Riverside came right back with a 13-4 run to end the half with the Mustangs holding on to a 32-26 lead at the break.
Cal Poly took a 13 point lead (43-30) at 13:06 when Clancy scored her second bucket of the game.
UCR went on a 15-5 run and cut the lead to three (48-45) with just 5:32 left in the game when the Mustangs responded with four quick points on a jumper by Bloetscher and a layup by Reeves.
The Highlanders would hit a three, but Clancy responded with her lone three of the game and Reeves would follow with a field goal to put the game out of reach.
The Mustangs return to the court on Saturday when they host Cal State Northridge in a Big West Conference game at 4 pm.
