
Cal Poly Runs Past Matadors, 82-52

SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. – The Cal Poly women's basketball team won its seventh straight game with 10 of the 11 active players scoring in an 82-52 win over Cal State Northridge in front of 606 fans at Mott Gym on Saturday. With the win Cal Poly remains perfect in Big West play with a 7-0 record and improves to 11-7 overall. Cal State Northridge falls to 1-18 overall and 1-5 in conference games.
Junior Abby Bloetscher led the team with 16 points and seven rebounds while true freshman Molly Schlemer came off the bench to add 12. Sophomore Kayla Griffin was the third Mustang in double figures with 11 points.
Bloetscher's points came when she hit six of 10 from the floor and made all four of her shots from the line. Schlemer was also six of 10 from the floor with Griffin hitting four of seven from the floor and thee of four from the line.
Ashlee Burns, off the bench, scored nine points while Rachel Clancy scored eight and Caroline Reeves added seven.
Cal Poly shot 52 percent from the floor making 33 of 64 field goals while the team only hit four of 12 long range. CSUN shot 34 percent from the floor and made for of 11 from beyond the arc.
The Mustangs outrebounded the Matadors 41-29 with Bloetscher and Reeves leading the team with seven boards.
Cal Poly's overwhelming defense forced 29 Matador turnovers while earning credit for 17 steals.
The only tie of the game came with the score 2-2 when the Mustangs went on a 12-2 run to open up a 10 point lead on a pair of free throws by Tamara Wells with 14:32 on the clock.
Cal Poly continued to build its lead and went to the locker room with its largest margin, 18 points (38-20), when Bloetscher hit a jumper with 22 seconds remaining in the half.
In the second half CSUN cut the lead to 15 at 18:55, but would get no closer as the Mustangs held their largest lead of the game, 30, in the closing minutes.
The Mustangs will return to the court on Thursday, Jan. 27 when the team travels to Central Coast rival UCSB for a Big West Conference game at 7 pm.
