
Cal Poly Rolls Past USF, Win 80-55

SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. – Senior Rachel Clancy scored 23 points in leading the Cal Poly women's basketball team to an 80-55 win over the visiting Dons from the University of San Francisco in San Luis Obispo on Wednesday. With the win the Mustangs snap a five game winless streak to improve to 3-5 while USF lost for the fifth straight time and falls to 2-8.
Clancy's game-high came when she hit eight of 15 shots from the floor and five of eight from long range while fellow senior Desiray Johnston tied a career-high when she dished out nine assists.
Christine Martin and Johnston led the team with seven rebounds with Martin adding 10 points off the bench.
Overall 11 different Mustangs scored in the game.
Vania Singleterry led the Dons with 13 points with Donnisha Taylor chipping in with 10.
The Mustangs shot 41 percent from the floor, but hit 53 percent from beyond the arch. Cal Poly hit nine of 17 from long range while USF shot 36 percent from the floor and only hit seven of 21 from long range.
The Mustangs dominated the boards 51-40 and committed 12 less turnovers (13-25).
The Mustangs led nearly wire to wire with the only tied score coming in the opening moments of the game.
Singleterry scored on a layup to cut the lead to one (12-11) with 14:06 left in the first half when the Mustangs went on a 9-0 run to open up a 10 point lead (21-11) on a layup by Jonae Ervin.
The Mustangs didn't back off and had it largest lead of 22 points of the half (40-18) when Kayla Griffen made the first of two free throws with 3:48 left in the half.
The Mustangs settled for a 19 point lead (42-23) at the break.
Cal Poly continued with the pressure in the second half and enjoyed its largest lead of 31 twice, the last coming with 9:24 left in the game when Caroline Reeves hit a two pointer.
The Mustangs return to the court on Saturday, Dec. 18 when the team travels to San Jose State to take on the Spartans of the WAC at 7 pm.
