
Clancy, Bloetscher Spark Mustangs to Season-Opening Win

SEATTLE, Wash. -- Senior guard Rachel Clancy and junior post player Abby Bloetscher combined for 32 points as Cal Poly opened its 2010-11 women's basketball season with a 74-57 victory over Seattle on Friday night in the Connolly Center.
Clancy scored 18 points, corraled nine rebounds and dished out seven assists while Bloetscher produced 14 points, seven boards and three steals for head coach Faith Mimnaugh's Mustangs.
Cal Poly shot 54.1 percent from the floor and outrebounded the Redhawks 44-42. The Mustangs turned the ball over one more time than Seattle, 20-19.
Seattle held a couple early leads, the last at 7-5, before Cal Poly went on a 10-0 run to take control of the game.
Clancy's jumper capped the run, giving the Mustangs a 15-7 advantage with 14:32 to go in the first half, and Cal Poly never looked back.
The Mustangs opened up a 17-point cushion at 38-21 late in the first half and settled for a 41-27 advantage at the break.
Cal Poly never let Seattle get closer than 13 points in the second half and opened up a lead as big as 22 points, 70-48, on another jumper by Clancy with 4:17 to play.
Seattle was led by Salena Dickerson with 21 points and 11 rebounds. Amani Butler added 10 points for the Redhawks.
Cal Poly made 57 percent of its floor shots in the first half and 52 percent in the second half, but the Mustangs connected on just three of 16 three-pointers.
Senior forward Kristina Santiago, the reigning Big West Conference player of the year, played just two minutes and did not score.
Coming off the bench, Kayla Griffin tallied eight points while Caroline Reeves added seven points and Jonae Ervin and Ashlee Burns each scored six points.
Seattle was held to just 24.6 percent shooting from the floor but made 25 of 38 free throws, compared to just five of 10 for the Mustangs.
Cal Poly plays its second game of the season on the road as well, visiting Fresno State on Wednesday at 7 p.m.
The Mustangs play their home opener Friday, Nov. 19, against Loyola Marymount at 7 p.m. in Mott Gym.
