
Mustangs Improve to 2-0 with 72-67 Win Over Fresno St.

FRESNO, Calif. – Ashlee Burns scored a career-high 22 points in leading the Mustangs to a 72-67 non-conference win over the Bulldogs of Fresno State on Wednesday. With the win the Mustangs remain unbeaten at 2-0 while Fresno State falls to 2-1 on the season.
Rachel Clancy and Abby Bloetscher each added 12 points while Jonae Ervin scored 11.
Burns' points came when she hit eight of 11 from the floor and five of seven from long range. Clancy was four of nine and two of six while Bloetscher was four of five from the floor.
The Mustangs shot 51 percent from the floor and hit eight of 11 from long range.
Jaleesa Ross led the Bulldogs with 12 points with Rosie Moult and Bree Farley each adding 11.
Fresno State shot 37 percent from the floor and made just 11 of 41 three-point shots.
Cal Poly held a two rebound advantage (39-37) and was led by Bloetscher's team-high seven.
The Bulldogs jumped to a 7-0 lead before the Mustangs got on the board on a jumper by Bloetscher at the 17:07 mark. Fresno State held an 11-4 advantage at the second media timeout (11:38).
Fresno State surged ahead 22-8 with 8:07, but a three pointer by Clancy cut the lead to 22-11 with the Bulldogs calling a timeout.
Following the timeout, Christine Martin hit a three followed by Clancy's second, cutting the lead to 22-17. Ervin followed with a layup at 6:24 (22-19).
Cal Poly continued to chip away at the lead and on a layup by Burns, Cal Poly held its first lead at 30-29 with 2:31 left.
With 19 seconds remaining in the half, Buirns hit her third three of the half for a 37-33 lead at the break.
The Mustangs opened the second half with a fast break layup by Ervin and after a second FSU turnover Bloetscher converted a jumper for a 41-33 lead and a Fresno State timeout.
At the first media timeout of the second half (15:34), Cal Poly maintained a 48-41 lead.
The Mustangs stretched their lead to 11 (57-46) at the under 12 media timeout on a three pointer by Burns. And extended the lead to 15 (61-46) on Burns' fifth three of the game. Cal Poly held that lead into the media timeout with 7:28 left in the game.
Over the next two minutes Fresno State went on a 10-2 run to cut the lead 63-56, forcing a Cal Poly timeout.
With 2:05 left in the game, Dsiray Johnston missed the front end of a one and one, but Burns connected on one of two from the line to extend the Mustang lead to 66-59.
Fresno State cut the lead to five (66-61) on a layup and proceeded to call a timeout.
A three pointer by FSU's Ross cut the Mustang lead to three (70-67) with 23 second remaining.
Bloetscher made a pair of fee throws with 15 second remaining to give the Mustangs a 72-67 win.
The Mustangs return to the court on Friday when they open the home season against the Loyola Marymount Lions in Mott Gym at 7 pm.
