
Men's Tennis Secures Dramatic 4-2 Victory Over UC Davis

SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. — Playing in his first match in nearly three weeks, sophomore Jack Cross earned the dramatic clinching point to propel Cal Poly men’s tennis to a 4-2 victory over UC Davis on Friday at the Ronca Tennis Center.
The Mustangs improved to 2-0 in Big West play with the win and currently sit in a tie for first place in the conference standings with Blue-Green rival UC Santa Barbara.
Cal Poly opened the dual by coasting to the doubles point. Sean Kamyshev and Aaron Eliscu teamed up for a dominant 6-0 victory at No. 3 and then Raz Haviv and Sean Ferguson secured the doubles point with a 6-2 triumph at No. 2.
In singles action, freshman phenom Jovan Lubbe made quick work of his opponent at No. 1, earning an emphatic 6-0, 6-1 victory to give Cal Poly a 2-0 lead and improve to 10-6 on the season.
The Aggies (9-10, 2-2 Big West) secured a win in straight sets at No. 4 to make it 2-1. Then at No. 6 after winning the first set, Leo Matthysen was forced to medically retire in the third set. This leveled the match at 2-2.
At No. 3, Luc Hoeijmans put the Mustangs on the verge of clinching the dual with a hard-fought 7-5, 7-5 win. Playing in his first singles match since March 14, Hoeijmans improved to 9-3 on the year.
With Cal Poly leading 3-2, the final two matches at No. 2 and No. 5 both went to a third set. Battling through pain, Cross found a way to be the hero, delivering a thrilling 4-6, 6-2, 7-5 comeback victory at No. 5 to clinch the win for the Mustangs. It was also his first singles match since March 14 and he moved to 9-5 on the year.
The Mustangs improved to 11-7 on the season with the win, their most victories since securing 15 during the 2022 season when they finished the year ranked No. 63 in the country.
Cal Poly hosts UC San Diego (8-12, 0-2 Big West) at noon Saturday at the Ronca Tennis Center.
