RIVERSIDE, Calif. — Aaron Eliscu rose to the occasion once again in the No. 2 singles role, securing two overall wins as the Mustangs defeated UC Riverside 4-1 on Thursday at the SRC Tennis Courts in Riverside.
Cal Poly improved to a perfect 4-0 in Big West play, marking the program’s best start to conference action since the 2021-22 season.
The Mustangs sit alone atop the conference in Big West wins but are tied in winning percentage with No. 32 UC Santa Barbara (3-0) and UC Irvine (2-0).
Cal Poly has already locked up a top-three finish and a first-round bye in the conference tournament. The Mustangs can guarantee a top-two finish and byes for the first two rounds with a victory over UC Irvine tomorrow.
For another week, the Mustangs secured the doubles point that had eluded them earlier in the dual season. The pairs at No. 2 (Raz Haviv / Sean Ferguson, 6-1) and No. 3 (Aaron Eliscu / Sean Kamyshev, 6-3) faced little resistance in dispatching their Highlander opponents.
Jovan Lubbe opened singles with a stunning 6-0, 6-0 straight-set sweep and shutout at the No. 1 spot, the first double goose egg of his collegiate career. He improved his singles record to 12-6 on the season with four straight wins.
He was followed closely by Sean Ferguson, who moved to 5-1 on the season after easily handling his Riverside foe 6-1, 6-0. Aaron Eliscu (11-5) earned his second win at No. 2 singles by clinching the match 6-2, 7-5.
Luc Hoeijmans and Jack Cross went unfinished at No. 3 and No. 5, respectively, while Sean Kamyshev battled to a 6-7, 2-6 loss. Raz Haviv did not play singles, which moved Kamyshev, Cross, and Ferguson each up one spot in the lineup.
The Mustangs improved to 13-7 on the season with the win, their highest victory total since securing 15 during the 2022 season, when they finished the year ranked No. 63 nationally.
Cal Poly remains in the Los Angeles area for a Friday noon matinee at UC Irvine’s (10-6, 2-0 Big West) Anteater Tennis Stadium.
