Jack Cross Captures UCSB Classic Open Singles Flight B Championship

SANTA BARBARA, Calif. — At the UCSB Classic last weekend, hosted by Blue-Green rival UC Santa Barbara, Jack Cross defeated four Southwest region opponents en route to claiming the Open Singles Flight B title ahead of ITA Regionals in Malibu this week.
For the first time in 2026-27, the Mustangs traveled every healthy member of the team and competed against multiple highly ranked programs in the region, including Pepperdine, LMU, USC, San Diego State, UCLA, Saint Mary's, Stanford, Santa Clara, UC San Diego, and current Big West foes UC Irvine and the host Gauchos.
A few Mustangs got the monkey off their backs for fall play, as five-star recruit Evan Simon and sophomore returnees Denzel Seetso and Leo Matthysen enjoyed Round of 16 singles wins in their respective flights before bowing out in the quarterfinals. On the doubles side, Raz Haviv and Simon were the only pair to advance past the opening round but later fell to LMU's duo.
However, Cross led the way in Santa Barbara, tallying four victories over high-quality opponents from UCLA, host UC Santa Barbara, UC San Diego, and Santa Clara. Cross' opponent in the final, Tiago Boschmans—whom the junior Mustang dominated 6-2, 6-3—had previously eliminated senior transfer Ernst Gouws in the Round of 16 before Cross completed his avenging.
Now, led by Jovan Lubbe receiving Cal Poly's only automatic main draw qualification, the Mustangs will head to Malibu, Calif., for ITA Regionals, the official start of fall tennis' postseason, before returning for a few more team tournaments later this month and bleeding into November. The ITA Southwest Regionals send the finalists in singles play as well as the doubles champion to the NCAA Individual Championships in Georgia in November.
