WESTLAKE VILLAGE, Calif. — Four individual Mustangs represented Cal Poly men's tennis in the hidden dual format at the Sherwood Collegiate Cup, hosted by SMU at the prestigious Sherwood Country Club.
Head coach Nick Carless traveled with returners Raz Haviv (Sr.), Jack Cross (Jr.), and Leo Matthysen (So.), as well as Ernst Gouws, the program's highly touted fifth-year transfer from Liberty. It was the first action of the season for all four Mustangs and for Carless, as the season had kicked off with associate head coach Jurgen De Jager and sophomore ace Jovan Lubbe heading to Oklahoma for the ITA All-American Championships just a few weeks earlier.
The first day of the tournament was successful for all Mustangs involved, especially in doubles, where they swept their matchups. Raz Haviv / Leo Matthysen (Cal Poly) defeated Photos Photiades / Will Steinberg (Pepperdine) 4-1, while Jack Cross / Ernest Gouws (Cal Poly) simultaneously took down Louis Bocquet / Toki Adachi (Cal Lutheran) 4-1.
On the singles side of the opening day, Haviv (CP) beat Photiades (PEPP) 6-1, 6-3; Gouws (CP) put on a clinic against Steinberg (PEPP) 6-2, 6-0; and Matthysen (CP) picked up a win over Adachi (CLU) 7-6 (5), 6-2. Cross was slated to face Cal Lutheran's other entrant, Louis Bocquet, but had to withdraw due to injury. Cross was also forced to scrap the rest of his doubles matches with Gouws due to the lingering issue.
The rest of the weekend did not go Cal Poly's way, as the Mustangs were held winless in their remaining singles and doubles matches against players from New Mexico, Cal, and USC. Full results for the tournament can be found HERE.
Cal Poly men's tennis is off this week before returning to action at the UCSB Classic from Oct. 9-11.
