SAN DIEGO, Calif. — Cal Poly men's tennis team flipped the script Wednesday at the Barnes Tennis Center, avenging last season’s heartbreaking Big West Championship quarterfinal elimination with a statement-making 4-0 shutout over UC San Diego.
Cal Poly earned its first bagel as well as 15th overall win of the Spring dual season, tying for the most victories by the program since 2018.
The three-seed Mustangs (15-8), ranked No. 72 coming into championship week, dominated in doubles play to seize a 1-0 lead. The No. 1 pair of Jovan Lubbe and Leo Matthysen delivered a swift and convincing 6-2 win, followed closely by the No. 2 duo of Aaron Eliscu and Sean Kamyshev, who clinched the doubles point with a 6-1 triumph.
The momentum surged into singles, where Luc Hoeijmans made an emphatic statement. Back in a top-two singles spot for the first time since overcoming an injury earlier in the season, Hoeijmans was flawless.
He stormed through his No. 2 singles match, shutting out Prathinav Chunduru in straight sets, 6-0, 6-0, to give Cal Poly a commanding 2-0 advantage. Sean Ferguson extended the lead to 3-0 with his own near-perfect 6-2, 6-0 victory at the No. 5 position.
The clinching moment belonged to Eliscu once again, who provided the bookend on his spectacular day. Just one week after upsetting No. 57 Dominique Rolland of UC Santa Barbara, the senior Cinderella story found himself competing at the No. 1 singles spot for the first time in his collegiate career.
Rising to the challenge, Eliscu fought to a hard-earned 6-4, 7-5 win over Oliver Worth, slamming the door on the Tritons and securing the Mustangs' spot in the next round.
No. 3 seed Cal Poly now advances to a highly anticipated rematch against the tournament's No. 2 seed and the only team to defeat the Mustangs during the regular season: UC Irvine.
That match takes place Friday, April 24 at 1:00 p.m. with the winner advancing to the Championship final on Saturday at 10 o’clock.
