
Mustangs Earn 3rd Straight Big West Victory

SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. — The Cal Poly men’s tennis team picked up its third straight Big West victory to open conference play, taking down UC San Diego 4-1 at the Ronca Tennis Center on Saturday.
With a 3-0 record in conference play, the Mustangs (12-7) currently sit in a tie for first place in the Big West standings with Blue-Green rival UC Santa Barbara with three regular season matches left.
Cal Poly got off to a fast start against the Tritons (8-13, 0-3 Big West) by capturing the doubles point. First, Raz Haviv and Sean Ferguson won 6-3 at the No. 2 spot and then Aaron Eliscu and Sean Kamyshev clinched the doubles point for the Mustangs with a 6-4 triumph at No. 3. Both pairings improved to 3-1 together this season.
In singles, Ferguson dominated his opponent at No. 6, winning 6-0, 6-4 to give Cal Poly a 2-0 lead. He moved to 4-1 on the season with the victory.
UCSD won in straight sets at No. 2 to make it 2-1, but Jack Cross delivered a 6-4, 6-3 victory at No. 5 to help Cal Poly take a 3-1 advantage and put the Mustangs one singles win away from clinching the dual. It was Cross’ third straight singles victory and he improved to 10-5 on the year.
With victory in sight, freshman phenom Jovan Lubbe stepped up and delivered the clinching point. At No. 1, Lubbe fought hard in a second-set tiebreak to close out a 6-4, 7-6 (7-3) win and propel Cal Poly to victory. The Hazyview, South Africa native improved to 11-6.
Riding a three-match winning streak, Cal Poly travels to Southern California to face UC Riverside on Thursday and UC Irvine on Friday for its final two regular season road matches.
