SAN LUIS OBISPO – A four-run first inning from Long Beach State helped mark the difference during Saturday afternoon’s doubleheader opener as the Cal Poly softball program began a three-game series with a 6-1 setback. Cal Poly also fell in Saturday’s second matchup, 7-0, trailing early once more following a three-run first from Long Beach State.
Prior to Saturday’s doubleheader, Cal Poly retired the No. 22 jersey of 2007 NFCA All-America selection Lisa Modglin. Also a two-time NFCA All-Region and All-Big West first team selection, Modglin (2004-07) still holds Cal Poly career records for hits (236), runs (152), doubles (43), triples (17), total bases (379) and slugging percentage (.593).
The Big West’s single season batting leader after hitting .476 in 2007, Modglin is just the second Mustang to have her jersey retired at Bob Janssen Field alongside All-American pitcher Desarie Knipfer.
During Saturday’s opening 6-1 loss, three Long Beach State players contributed run-scoring hits to begin the matchup before center fielder Audree Mendoza supplied an RBI sacrifice fly as The Beach took a 4-0 advantage before Cal Poly had the opportunity to bat.
Offensively, Cal Poly saw its first six hitters retired in order by Long Beach State starting righthander Isabella Alonso (9-4) before senior left fielder Kiara Blanchard singled to lead off the bottom half of the third. Two batters later, Cal Poly pushed across its lone run after senior right fielder Maddy Bermudez doubled to left center.
Retired in order during the fourth and fifth innings, Cal Poly stranded solo baserunners in the sixth and seventh.
Pitching seven full innings of relief, freshman righthander Kaylee Davis struck out three before conceding Long Beach State’s final two runs in the top of the seventh.

During Saturday’s second 7-0 setback, Long Beach State went up 3-0 in the top of the first through a run-scoring sacrifice fly from shortstop Avery Weisbrook before third baseman Nina Sepulveda supplied a two-run double.
After seeing its first eight batters retired in order by Long Beach State starting righthander Lindsey Cowans, Cal Poly’s best opportunity to break onto the scoreboard occurred during the fourth after sophomore catcher Maya Venegas reached on a one-out fielding error before freshman first baseman Myleigh Cooper singled. Long Beach State reliever Jailynn Banda (4-3), however, retired the first two batters she faced to close the inning and keep Cal Poly scoreless.
The Beach then added a single run in the fifth and two more in the seventh to complete the scoring.
Cooper led Cal Poly with two hits in game No. 2 as the Mustangs also stranded a pair of baserunners in the seventh.
