SAN LUIS OBISPO – A one-out solo homer in the top of the ninth inning from Long Beach State designated player Elissa Guerrero broke the deadlock Sunday afternoon at Bob Janssen Field as the Cal Poly softball program closed a three-game series with a 3-2 setback.
Cal Poly took Sunday’s initial lead during the bottom of the second as sophomore Sienna Erskine (above, right) brought home junior pinch runner Sehren Martinez with a one-out single to left field.
Long Beach State then struck twice in the top half of the fourth to go in front after third baseman Nina Sepulveda supplied a one-out, run-scoring single before scoring herself through center fielder Audree Mendoza’s two-out double.
The Mustangs, however, tied the matchup at the first opportunity after freshman first baseman Myleigh Cooper led off with a double, reached third through senior center fielder A’Niyla Byrd’s sacrifice bunt and scored on senior third baseman Mylina Garza’s sacrifice fly.
In the circle for Cal Poly, junior righthander Ally Robbins retired 10 successive Long Beach State hitters between the fifth and eighth innings to keep the matchup tied.

Cal Poly’s best opportunity to seize victory occurred during the eighth after freshman shortstop Leilani Allen led off with a base hit before Cooper followed with a one-out single. Long Beach State reliever Kate Barnett (4-4), however, forced outs from the next two spots in Cal Poly’s lineup to preserve the deadlock.
With Mustang starting freshman righthander Kaylee Davis returning to the circle during the eighth, Guerrero flied a full-count delivery over the center field wall to hand The Beach the lead. The Mustangs, meanwhile, were retired in order by Barnett during the bottom of the ninth.
Offensively, Cooper finished 3-for-3 to improve her team leading batting average to .393. Defensively, Byrd (right) recorded 12 of 27 outs in center field.
With two Big West regular season series remaining, Cal Poly visits Hawai’i for a Friday, April 24 doubleheader (5 p.m. PT) and Saturday, April 25 solo matchup (2 p.m.).
