LA JOLLA – A two-run homer from UC San Diego designated player Maalia Cherry during the bottom of the first inning Sunday morning accounted for the eventual decisive edge as the Cal Poly softball program closed a three-game series against the Tritons with a 6-0 setback.
Following her first first-inning homer, Cherry added a run-scoring double in the third to spark a four-run inning from the hosts.
Offensively, Cal Poly produced four hits, twice advancing baserunners to third in the second and, the sixth, when freshman first baseman Myleigh Cooper’s two-out single placed Mustangs at the corner bases. Junior center fielder A’Niyla Byrd, however, grounded out to end the threat as Cal Poly stranded five total baserunners Sunday.
Cal Poly plays two of its final three regular season series at home, starting against Long Beach State with a Saturday, April 18 doubleheader and Sunday, April 19 solo matchup.
