Mustangs Drop Friday Pair at San Diego’s Reggie Smith Invite

SAN DIEGO – Sophomore righthander Bree Brennan struck out a career high seven Kansas City hitters Friday evening, but the Cal Poly softball program closed opening-day action at San Diego’s Reggie Smith Invitational with a 4-2 setback. Cal Poly also fell in Friday’s opening matchup to Washington, 8-0 (five innings).
During Friday’s 4-2 loss to Kansas City (7-7), the Roos went in front at the first opportunity as third baseman Kimberly Yepez singled home second baseman Ella Husak in the top of the first inning. Kansas City then added single runs in the second and third through run-scoring hits from shortstop Megan Johnston and right fielder Maya Anthony.
Cal Poly twice stranded a pair of baserunners to close the first and fourth innings before breaking onto the scoreboard in the fifth through run-scoring singles from freshman third baseman Leilani Allen and senior designated player Mylina Garza.
The Mustangs, however, stranded one more in the sixth and another in the seventh.
In the circle for Cal Poly, Brennan (2-2) struck out the Kansas City side in the first and two more in the second before giving way to junior righthander Ally Robbins with two down during the fifth after the Roos went up 4-0.
During Friday’s opening 8-0 setback to Washington (12-6), Mustang starting freshman righthander Kaylee Davis (2-5) stranded one Washington baserunner in the first before the Huskies pushed across the game’s opening run in the second as center fielder Sophi Mazzola singled home left fielder Ava Carroll with one down.
Davis retired Washington in order during the third and stranded two in the fourth before the Huskies struck for seven runs in the fifth, capped by two-run doubles from shortstop Melody Acevedo and right fielder Kaycie Burdick.
Offensively, Cal Poly was kept without a baserunner until second baseman Sehren Martinez singled with one down in the third. The Mustangs, however, were retired in order during the fourth and fifth to close the run-rule defeat.
Cal Poly continues Reggie Smith Invitational action on Saturday, Feb. 28 against San Diego at 4:30 p.m.
