SAN DIEGO – Sophomore catcher Maya Venegas produced a late run-scoring hit for the Cal Poly softball program Saturday afternoon, but the Mustangs were undone by a five-run third inning by host San Diego as the Mustangs sustained a 6-1 setback at the Reggie Smith Invitational.
Mustangs starting freshman righthander Kaylee Davis (2-5) kept San Diego scoreless to close the first before the Toreros produced the eventual winning run during the second with center fielder Kaylee Oh leading off with a double before ultimately scoring on a wild pitch.
San Diego then struck for its five-run third inning highlighted by a two-out, bases-clearing triple from second baseman Mallory Axline.
After loading the bases with two down during the third against San Diego starting righthander Charlie Johnson (4-3) and failing to score, Cal Poly eventually broke through in the sixth as Venegas singled home freshman pinch runner Karina Choi.
Cal Poly closes action at the Reggie Smith Invitational on Sunday, March 1 with a 9 a.m. doubleheader versus Kansas City and Washington.
