SAN LUIS OBISPO – Freshman righthander Kaylee Davis (above) tossed her first collegiate complete-game shutout in Wednesday afternoon’s 2-0, doubleheader-opening victory against Manhattan while four different Mustangs supplied RBI during game No. 2 as the Cal Poly softball program completed a sweep of the Jaspers with a 5-4 evening victory.
During Wednesday’s opening 2-0 victory, Cal Poly (5-9) was kept hitless by Manhattan starting righthander Natalie Debus (1-1) until the third inning, when freshman shortstop Madi Bohannon and sophomore right fielder Bermudez strung together successive singles.
Freshman third baseman Leilani Allen followed with a sacrifice bunt and, on the play, Jaspers first baseman Sophia Kiseloski’s throw to third sailed over teammate Jamie Falotico. The miscue allowed Bohannon to score and freshman first baseman Myleigh Cooper followed with a run-scoring sacrifice fly as the Mustangs exited the second inning with the game’s only runs.
In the circle for Cal Poly, Davis (2-4) conceded a leadoff single to Jaspers center fielder Brianna Estevez to open the matchup before retiring eight of the next nine Manhattan hitters. She allowed solitary Manhattan singles in the third, fifth and seventh without letting a baserunner past second until the seventh, when the Jaspers loaded the bags with two down. However, Davis – who struck out four – forced a game-ending groundout from Estevez to secure victory.
During Wednesday’s second victory, Cal Poly broke a scoreless deadlock with a four-run fifth inning as senior first baseman Mylina Garza and sophomore second baseman Sienna Erskine contributed run-scoring hits before pinch hitter Maya Venegas delivered a two-run double to hand the Mustangs a 4-0 advantage.
Manhattan cut its deficit to 4-1 in the sixth through a sacrifice fly from second baseman Lainey Brown before the Mustangs reaffirmed their four-run lead in the bottom half after Cooper singled home Bermudez.
Manhattan, however, once more loaded the bases in the seventh – this time without an out before Estevez produced a run-scoring fielder’s choice. Shortstop Samantha Kelly followed with a run-scoring groundout before Debus plated Falotico with a single down the left field line.
Cooper, who tossed the final two innings to earn her first career save, induced a game-ending groundout to strand the potential tying run on second base.
Sophomore righthander Bree Brennan (2-1), who completed the initial five innings with three hits allowed, earned the victory for Cal Poly.
Winners of five of its last six, Cal Poly completes Big West preparations at San Diego’s Feb. 27-March 1 Reggie Smith Invitational. Action gets underway Friday, Feb. 26 with a 4:30 p.m. doubleheader versus Washington and Kansas City.
