SAN LUIS OBISPO – The Cal Poly men’s soccer program completes its season-opening, four-match road trip when visiting Air Force on Friday, Sept. 5 (6 p.m. PT) and 2024 College Cup semifinalist Denver on Monday, Sept. 8 (5 p.m. PT). At Air Force (0-3-1), Cal Poly (0-2-0) seeks not only its first points of the year, but first goal of 2025 following successive 2-0, season-opening setbacks at San Jose State (Aug. 21) and California Baptist (Aug. 30). Air Force, similarly, seeks its first victory of the season after starting 2025 with three defeats before securing a 2-2 draw at UC Riverside (Sept. 1). Denver (2-2-0), which opened the year ranked No. 4 in the United Soccer Coaches preseason poll, has since dropped to the receiving votes section. The Pioneers most recently recorded a 2-1 home win against SIEU (Aug. 31.)
CAL POLY VERSUS AIR FORCE: Facing Air Force for just the second time in the last nine years, Cal Poly has won three of the previous four decisions – including a 2-1 home victory in the last meeting on Sept. 17, 2023. The Mustangs have visited Air Force just twice prior, falling on Sept. 7, 2010 (2-1), but prevailing on Sept. 27, 2013 (5-1). Cal Poly leads the all-time series, 4-2-1.
CAL POLY VERSUS DENVER: Monday’s matchup marks the first meeting between the two sides since the Pioneers delivered a 2-1 home victory on Sept. 29, 2013. With Cal Poly’s last win against Denver a 1-0 road decision (Sept. 3, 2010), the Pioneers lead the all-time series, 3-2-2.
MUSTANGS RETURN TO NATIONAL TELEVISION:Hosting its first nationally televised match in more than a decade at Mustang Memorial Field, Cal Poly’s Wednesday, Oct. 1 Big West opener against UC Davis will be broadcast on ESPNU. The game marks a re-match between the two sides from last fall’s Big West Championship semifinal that finished 1-1. UC Davis, however, eliminated Cal Poly on penalties before defeating UC Santa Barbara in the final.
MCCUNE, OWENS NAMED TO HERMANN TROPHY WATCH LIST: For the first time in Cal Poly history, multiple Mustangs were named to a Hermann Trophy Watch List as senior goalkeeper Nicky McCune and junior defender Parker Owens earned Aug. 21 candidacy for collegiate national player of the year recognition. Among the 29 standouts named, Cal Poly joined Cornell as the only programs – among more than 200 Division I squads – with two candidates. A total of 15 players will be named 2025 Hermann Trophy semifinalists on Dec. 9 at the conclusion of NCAA Division I All-America voting. From that list, three players will be voted as finalists with the 2025 recipient announced Jan. 9, 2026, at the historic Missouri Athletic Club in St. Louis.
LOOKING AHEAD: The Mustangs take a nine-game home unbeaten run (dating to 2023) into their Thursday, Sept. 11 matchup against San Francisco. Kickoff from Mustang Memorial Field is 7 p.m. for Cal Poly, which concludes its home-opening stand against Saint Mary’s (Sunday, Sept. 14) and Utah Tech (Thursday, Sept. 18).
