Mustangs Finish in 2-2 Sunday Draw with Saint Mary’s

SAN LUIS OBISPO – Freshman defender Tanner Casey and sophomore forward Quinn Mahoney (above) each scored their second goals of the season Sunday afternoon, but Saint Mary's strikes 13 seconds after the opening whistle and 27 minutes from full time saw the Cal Poly men's soccer program settle for a 2-2 draw.
Senior goalkeeper Nicky McCune chalked up a solitary save for Cal Poly (1-3-2), which furthered its unbeaten home streak at Mustang Memorial Field to 11 successive matches dating to 2023.
Saint Mary's (0-3-3) opened Sunday's scoring, playing the kickoff up the right side and into the penalty box for forward Kayvon Monfared, who curled an attempt into the top left corner of the Mustang net after just 13 seconds.
Cal Poly, however, equalized in the 11th minute as senior midfielder Bakuena Ramakatsa found Casey from a corner kick and the Mustang defender volleyed past Saint Mary's goalkeeper Tommy Davis.
Outshooting Saint Mary's during the first half, 10-3, Cal Poly surged ahead on 25 minutes after an initial attempt from Ramakatsa fell to Mahoney, who corralled the loose ball and fired past Gaels reserve goalkeeper Sam Bentley.
The Gaels equalized midway through the second half though, dispossessing Cal Poly in its own half before midfielder Cameron Kobey bested McCune.
Cal Poly completes its three-game home stand Thursday, Sept. 18, welcoming Utah Tech for the first time. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m.
