SAN LUIS OBISPO – Unbeaten in 11 successive home matchups dating to 2023, the Cal Poly men’s soccer program closes a three-game run at Mustang Memorial Field when welcoming Utah Tech – for the first time – on Thursday, Sept. 18. The Mustangs then close the week at San Diego State on Sunday, Sept. 21. Kickoff both evenings is 7 p.m. for Cal Poly (1-3-2), unbeaten in three of its previous four outings, but entering Thursday’s matchup off of a scoreless draw with No. 20 San Francisco (Sept. 11) and 2-2 decision against Saint Mary’s (Sept. 14). Utah Tech (1-3-3), facing its fourth Big West opponent of the season in Cal Poly, dropped a 1-0 decision at Loyola Marymount Monday evening. San Diego State (3-5-0) – managed by former Mustang assistant coach Ryan Hopkins – enjoys a six-day break after snapping a four-game slide with a 2-0 home victory against Yale (Sept. 15).
CAL POLY VERSUS UTAH TECH: The two sides drew 1-1 in the only previous matchup on Sept. 16, 2024 in St. George, Utah, with Mustang forward Quinn Mahoney contributing a fourth-minute strike.
CAL POLY VERSUS SAN DIEGO STATE: Visiting San Diego State for only the fourth time in program history, Cal Poly owns just one victory against the Aztecs in the past 25 years, delivering a 1-0 road win on Sept. 16, 2017. San Diego State prevailed at home in the last matchup, 3-0 (Sept. 1 2023), but Cal Poly leads the all-time series, 4-2-2.
HOME SWEET HOME: Cal Poly’s 11-match home unbeaten run marks a new program record at Mustang Memorial Field, eclipsing the previous mark of nine straight without a loss between the 2006 and 2007 seasons. During the streak, Cal Poly has conceded just five times and recorded seven shutouts since their last setback at Mustang Memorial Field – a 1-0 decision to rival UC Santa Barbara on Oct. 15, 2023.
MCCUNE IN FRAME: Having conceded just four times from open play in 540 minutes this season, senior Nicky McCune – the reigning Big West Goalkeeper of the Year – recorded his 10th career clean sheet in Cal Poly’s Sept. 11 scoreless home draw with No. 20 San Francisco to move into fourth place on the program’s career shutouts listing. McCune matched a season high with five saves during his first shutout of 2025, a 3-0 win at Air Force (Sept. 5).

MUSTANGS RETURN TO NATIONAL TELEVISION: Hosting its first nationally televised match in more than a decade at Mustang Memorial Field, Cal Poly’s Wednesday, Oct. 1 Big West opener against UC Davis will be broadcast on ESPNU. The game marks a re-match between the two sides from last fall’s Big West Championship semifinal that finished 1-1. UC Davis, however, eliminated Cal Poly on penalties before defeating UC Santa Barbara in the final.
MCCUNE, OWENS NAMED TO HERMANN TROPHY WATCH LIST: For the first time in Cal Poly history, multiple Mustangs were named to a Hermann Trophy Watch List as senior goalkeeper Nicky McCune and junior defender Parker Owens earned Aug. 21 candidacy for collegiate national player of the year recognition. Among the 29 standouts named, Cal Poly joined Cornell as the only programs – among more than 200 Division I squads – with two candidates. A total of 15 players will be named 2025 Hermann Trophy semifinalists on Dec. 9 at the conclusion of NCAA Division I All-America voting. From that list, three players will be voted as finalists with the 2025 recipient announced Jan. 9, 2026, at the historic Missouri Athletic Club in St. Louis.
LOOKING AHEAD: Cal Poly completes Big West preparations and opens the 2025 Blue-Green rivalry series against UC Santa Barbara when visiting Harder Stadium Saturday, Sept. 27 at 4 p.m. Scheduled as a non-conference matchup, the countable game in the Big West standings occurs at Cal Poly on Saturday, Oct. 18. While Cal Poly is undefeated at home versus UC Santa Barbara in 10 of the previous 15 matchups, the Mustangs have won just once at Harder Stadium in the past 24 years and 25 games.
