Mustangs Score Eight in Historic Offensive Night
9/18/2025 10:29:00 PM | Men's Soccer
SAN LUIS OBISPO – Highlighted by sophomore forward Quinn Mahoney's first career brace, seven different Mustangs found the back of the Utah Tech net Thursday evening as the Cal Poly men's soccer team set a new program Division I record for goals in an 8-0 victory at Mustang Memorial Field.
Junior forward Jack Civitts became the first Mustang in 17 years with a three-assist game for Cal Poly (2-3-2), which extended its program-record home unbeaten streak to 12 successive matches dating to 2023.
Cal Poly's eight-goal night eclipsed the previous Division I single game record of seven set during a Sept. 20, 1996 home victory against Texas-Pan American (now UTRGV).
The Mustangs also set a new program mark with seven individual assists.
In goal, senior Nicky McCune and freshman Dylan Glowaski each chalked up a save to combine on the clean sheet.
"We've felt a result like this was coming in some of the games we've played because, by and large, our performances have been at a good level. Tonight, the biggest difference was the ruthlessness we showed in finishing the chances we created," third-year Cal Poly head coach Oige Kennedy said. "Credit to the guys for taking what we've been doing in training and applying it to the game tonight.
"It was also fantastic to see the team keep that sharp edge when we made substitutions in the game. The guys that came in are all guys we trust and we saw tonight that that trust is valid. We'll always be a collective here at Cal Poly and it was good to be able to see that shine in the performance."
Mahoney, who equaled his four-goal output from last season with Thursday's brace, opened the scoring on three minutes before senior midfielder Bakuena Ramakatsa enjoyed his first as a Mustang in the 12th.
Civitts made it 3-0 in the 15th before freshman defender Tanner Casey scored his third of the season in the 21st.
Mahoney produced his second of the night 14 minutes after the halftime restart before sophomore forward Finn Linas (above) recorded his first of 2025 in the 73rd. A penalty from senior forward Oren Stuppel made in 7-0 in the 80th minute before junior forward Sean McTague capped the scoring on 83 minutes.
Cal Poly heads back on the road to close the week, visiting San Diego State Sunday, Sept. 21. Kickoff from SDSU Sports Deck is 7 p.m.
"We're excited for what's going to be a great game against San Diego State on Sunday," Kennedy added. "We want to test ourselves and to go against the defending WAC champions will be a huge opportunity for us."
