Mustangs Fall Twice Friday to Open Long Beach State Series
5/2/2025 9:22:00 PM | Softball
LONG BEACH – Freshman shortstop Sienna Erskine's two-out single in the top of the 10th inning helped break open a scoreless stalemate Friday afternoon, but Long Beach State scored twice in the bottom half to edge the Cal Poly softball program in the opening matchup of the final series of 2025, 2-1. Cal Poly also dropped game No. 2, 11-0, following a nine-run first inning from Long Beach State.
During Friday's opening 2-1, 10-inning setback, Cal Poly stranded the bases loaded during the second, left two on in the third and one apiece in the fifth, sixth, eighth and ninth before eventually breaking through in the 10th as Erskine followed a leadoff base hit from junior left fielder Kiara Blanchard with a two-out single up that middle. A throwing error from Long Beach State center fielder Makayla Medellin allowed Blanchard to score for a 1-0 lead.
In the circle for Cal Poly, senior starting righthander Kate Judy (above) limited Long Beach State to just three hits through the opening five innings without allowing a runner past second. Medellin tripled with one down during the bottom of the sixth, but Judy forced a pop up and ground out to end the threat.
Judy then retired Long Beach State in order to complete both the seventh and eighth. In the ninth, she walked successive batters with two down before inducing an inning-ending groundout from catcher Savannah Magadan.
Long Beach State shortstop Selena Perez, however, singled to lead off the bottom half of the 10th. Left fielder Jacquelyn Bickar next reached on a fielding error and, after a sacrifice bunt and intentional walk to Medellin that loaded the bases, first baseman Priscilla Iniguez singled to score Perez and Bickar.
Erskine led Cal Poly with two hits in the opener.
During Friday's second matchup, Long Beach State took control of the game with its nine-run first inning that included a two-run Iniguez single and bases-clearing triple from third baseman Carly Robbins.
Long Beach State added its final two runs during the fourth on the way to the run-rule decision.
Offensively, Cal Poly stranded a pair in the top half of the second but collected just four hits against Long Beach State starter Eryka Gonzales while advancing three baserunners into scoring position.
Cal Poly closes the 2025 season Saturday, May 3 with the series finale against Long Beach State. First pitch on ESPNU is 2 p.m.
