Mustangs Earn Saturday Split with Hawai’i on Senior Day
4/26/2025 6:56:00 PM | Softball
SAN LUIS OBISPO – Senior righthander Kate Judy struck out four in a complete-game effort during her final appearance at Bob Janssen Field as the Cal Poly softball program opened a Saturday doubleheader with a 6-2 victory against Hawai'i. The Mustangs, however, fell in game No. 2 to the Rainbow Wahine, 5-0.
During Saturday's initial 6-2 victory, Hawai'i opened the scoring at the first opportunity as third baseman Liliana Thomas produced a two-out, two-run double in the top of the first.
Kept to a solitary hit during the opening two innings, Cal Poly took over the lead in the third, first placing two runners on with one down before freshman right fielder Maddy Bermudez delivered a run-scoring single. Junior third baseman Mylina Garza followed with a base hit as Bermudez triggered a rundown on the play with the sequence bringing home sophomore center fielder A'Niyla Byrd. Senior catcher Julia Barnett then added a run-scoring sacrifice fly as Cal Poly exited the third with a 3-2 lead.
The Mustangs then ran the lead to 6-2 in the fourth with Byrd and junior left fielder Kiara Blanchrd supplying run-scoring hits before Barnett drew a bases-loaded walk.
After conceding the two runs in the first, Judy scattered six hits in the final six innings while stranding eight baserunners – with four left in scoring position.
Byrd led Cal Poly with two hits in Saturday's opener.
During Saturday's second matchup, Hawai'i once more jumped onto the scoreboard first as center fielder Chloe Borges and right fielder Larissa Goshi strung together two-out, run-scoring hits in the top of the second before catcher Izabella Martinez unloaded a two-run double.
Designated player Kolbi Kochi then furthered Hawai'i's lead to 5-0 in the third with a two-out single that plated shortstop Milan Ah Yat.
Offensively, Cal Poly saw its first seven batters retired until Hawai'i starting righthander Macy Brandl hit senior first baseman Malia Mah. Blanchard and Bermudez followed with singles before Cal Poly stranded the bases loaded. The Mustangs stranded two more in scoring position to close the fourth before being retired in order to cap the fifth, sixth and seventh innings.
In the circle for Cal Poly, senior righthander Paige Maier – also in her final home appearance – went the distance with a pair of strikeouts.
Cal Poly completes the 2025 season with a three-game, May 2-3 series at Long Beach State. Action on ESPN+ gets underway with a 3 p.m. doubleheader on Friday, May 2. The Mustangs then close 2025 with a Saturday, May 3 matchup on ESPNU.
