Mustangs Undone by Errors in Series Opener versus Hawai’i
4/25/2025 7:36:00 PM | Softball
SAN LUIS OBISPO – Junior left fielder Kiara Blanchard's third home run of the season provided the Cal Poly softball team an initial third-inning lead during Friday evening's series opener against Hawai'i, but three seventh-inning Mustang errors accounted for all of the Rainbow Wahine's runs as the hosts sustained a 4-1 setback at Bob Janssen Field.
After Cal Poly stranded the bases loaded to complete the second, Blanchard (above) homered for the second successive game with a leadoff solo shot down the right field line.
In the circle for Cal Poly, senior righthander Kate Judy kept Hawai'i to five hits and without a baserunner past second through the opening six innings.
After Judy struck out Hawai'i left fielder Maycen Gibbs to open the seventh, however, the Mustangs committed back-to-back fielding errors before Rainbow Wahine catcher Izabella Martnez singled. A third fielding error off the bat of Hawai'i second baseman Carys Murakami tied the matchup before Judy walked shortstop Milan Ah Yat to force in Hawai'i's second run.
First baseman Jamie McGaughey then delivered a two-run single for Hawai'i's 4-1 advantage.
Cal Poly, which enjoyed six hits but stranded seven baserunners, was retired in order to close the matchup.
The Mustangs and Rainbow Wahine complete the three-game series with a 2 p.m. doubleheader on Saturday, April 26.
