SAN LUIS OBISPO – Junior designated player Kiara Blanchard (above) hit a leadoff home run and freshman right fielder Maddy Bermudez added a career high three RBI, but the Cal Poly softball program – after loading the bases against UC San Diego during the bottom of the seventh and cutting its deficit to a single run – fell in Saturday's series finale, 9-8.
Facing a 9-6 disadvantage heading into the bottom of the seventh, Cal Poly loaded the bases with two down before freshman left fielder Aly Barrios scored junior third baseman Mylina Garza with an infield single and Blanchard drew a walk to force home senior first baseman Malia Mah.
However, UC San Diego righthander India Caldwell (8-12) – on her 102nd pitch of relief work – struck out Bermudez on a full count to end the matchup.
Cal Poly opened Saturday's scoring in the bottom of the first as Blanchard led off with her second homer of the season down the right field line. Senior catcher Julia Barnett followed later in the frame with a two-run single up the middle.
Handed the early lead, Cal Poly senior starting righthander Kate Judy returned in the top of the second to strike out the UC San Diego side. The Tritons though broke onto the scoreboard in the third with first baseman Zara Wasserman delivering a two-run double.
UC San Diego catcher Lily Hermosillo then led off the fourth with a lined shot that ricocheted off Judy's face mask. Judy was forced to give way to sophomore Amy Ross (who then yielded to senior Paige Maier and, finally, freshman Ava Doyle) as the Tritons scored four times with Wasserman contributing a second two-run double.
Facing the 6-3 deficit entering the bottom half of the fourth, Cal Poly took two runs back as Bermudez scored Mah and sophomore center fielder A'Niyla Byrd with a two-out single up the middle.
The Tritons, however, added three more runs in the fifth to build a 9-5 lead.
Cal Poly closed the gap to 9-6 in the sixth, Bermudez bringing home Blanchard with a single into center field.
Blanchard, Bermudez, Garza and Byrd each produced a team-leading two hits apiece.
Cal Poly closes its regular season home schedule when hosting Hawai'i for a three-game, April 25-26 series. Action begins with a 5 p.m. matchup on Friday, April 25.
