SAN LUIS OBISPO – Freshman righthander Ava Doyle kept UC San Diego scoreless in her collegiate debut relief outing Friday afternoon, but the Cal Poly softball program opened a three-game series and Friday afternoon doubleheader against UC San Diego with a 3-1 setback at Bob Janssen Field. Cal Poly also fell in game No. 2, 11-0 (five innings), after UC San Diego produced a nine-run third inning.
During Friday's opening 3-1 setback, UC San Diego struck the opening blow in the top of the first inning as shortstop Jaden Hill doubled home left fielder Morgan Eng with one down.
After conceding UC San Diego's initial run, senior starting righthander Kate Judy retired seven of the next eight Tritons. UC San Diego, however, went up 3-0 in the third after hits from first baseman Zara Wasserman and right fielder Ryanna Alano contributed to runs.
Doyle took over for Judy to begin the fifth and limited UC San Diego to two hits in two and one-third innings.
Offensively, Cal Poly stranded two in scoring position to close the first inning. Freshman shortstop Sienna Erskine (above) then singled to lead off the fourth before junior third baseman Mylina Garza hit into a double play.
Retired in order during the fifth, Cal Poly took a run back in the sixth as Hill underthrew Wasserman at first base on a Garza grounder with the miscue bringing home freshman right fielder Maddy Bermudez. The Mustangs, however, stranded their fifth and final baserunner in the seventh to end the matchup.
Junior left fielder Kiara Blanchard and Erskine co-led Cal Poly with two hits apiece in the opener.
During Friday's second matchup, UC San Diego once more opened the scoring at the first opportunity as Hill singled home Eng. The Tritons then went up 2-0 in the second through a Mustang fielding error.
UC San Diego broke the game open in the third, scoring nine times before the Mustangs recorded an out. Senior righthander Paige Maier took over for Cal Poly in the circle and, after conceding UC San Diego's final run, retired nine straight Tritons to end the matchup.
Out of the other dugout, Cal Poly received a second-inning single from sophomore second baseman Sehren Martinez before Garza enjoyed a two-out hit in the fourth. UC San Diego starting righthander Claire Adams (3-3) walked three Mustangs during the bottom half of the fifth, but stranded the bases loaded to close the run-rule matchup.
