Mustangs Drop Sunday Series Finale at UC Riverside
4/13/2025 3:42:00 PM | Softball
RIVERSIDE – A two-run UC Riverside first inning handed the hosts the lead from Sunday's series finale onset as the Cal Poly softball program – after splitting Saturday's doubleheader – fell, 5-1.
UC Riverside starting righthander Maddie Heinlin retired the Mustangs in order during the top of the first and Highlanders first baseman Haley Saole and designated player Mariana Palazuelos contributed run-scoring hits in the bottom half for the 2-0 advantage.
After also being held hitless in the second, Cal Poly stranded a baserunner in the third and two during the fourth as part of the seven it would leave. UC Riverside, meanwhile, increased its lead to 3-0 in the fourth as shortstop Trendee Kahunahana singled home left fielder Isabel McElroy.
Cal Poly, which enjoyed hits from seven players, broke onto the scoreboard in the sixth as freshman shortstop Sienna Erskine scored on a wild pitch. UC Riverside, however, scored twice more in the bottom half to complete the scoring.
Playing its next six matchups at home, Cal Poly opens a three-game series by hosting UC San Diego for a 3 p.m. doubleheader on Friday, April 18.
