On Historic Saturday, Mustangs Split Doubleheader at UC Riverside

RIVERSIDE – Senior righthander Kate Judy (above) tossed a complete-game, four-hitter with six strikeouts as the Cal Poly softball team – marking the 50th anniversary Saturday afternoon of the program's first intercollegiate varsity contest – opened a doubleheader and three-game series against UC Riverside with a 5-1 victory. Cal Poly, however, dropped the second contest, 5-0, during a matchup in which head coach Jenny Condon became just the third person in Big West history to coach 1,000 games at a member program.
During Saturday's opening 5-1 victory – in which the Mustangs secured their 100th all-time win against any opponent in the program's 51-season history – Cal Poly took the matchup's only lead during the top of the second. Hit with a pitch to lead off, junior third baseman Mylina Garza moved to second through sophomore Sehren Martinez's sacrifice bunt before scoring after freshman designated player Maya Venegas singled to center.
Cal Poly doubled its lead in the third as senior catcher Julia Barnett plated freshman right fielder Maddy Bermudez with a sacrifice fly.
UC Riverside cut into Cal Poly's lead during the bottom of the third as second baseman Rebeca Cabezas doubled in shortstop Trendee Kahunahana.
The Mustangs, however, responded in the fourth as a one-out Bermudez single up the middle brought around Martnez and senior first baseman Malia Mah for a 4-1 edge. A seventh-inning double steal – with junior center fielder Kiara Blanchard scoring – completed the scoring.
After conceding UC Riverside's lone run, Judy retired 10 of the next 11 Highlanders faced. The hosts loaded the bases with one down in the seventh before Judy retired both Kahunahana and right fielder Eti Lauti to close Cal Poly's victory.
During Saturday's second matchup, UC Riverside stranded the bases loaded to close the first before surging ahead in the second through a grand slam to left field from first baseman Haley Saole.
UC Riverside then went up 5-0 in the fourth as catcher Jackie Alday singled with two down to score Lauti.
Offensively, Cal Poly stranded Mah at third base in the third and was kept hitless by UC Riverside starting righthander Maddie Heinlin until Blanchard doubled to lead off the fourth (before being left on third).
Cal Poly's last opportunity to break up the shutout occurred in the seventh as Martinez singled with one down and stole second before Mah walked. Heinlin, however, struck out Mustang sophomore center fielder A'Niyla Byrd to end the contest.
