Mustangs Fall Twice Saturday to Cal State Fullerton

SAN LUIS OBISPO – Freshmen Maddy Bermudez (above) and Sienna Erskine both enjoyed multi-hit games during the Cal Poly softball program's Saturday doubleheader against Cal State Fullerton, but the Mustangs – who hit into four total inning-ending double plays on the afternoon – dropped both the opening matchup (2-0) and closing contest (9-0, five innings).
During Saturday's opening 2-0 setback, Cal Poly starting senior righthander Kate Judy kept Cal State Fullerton hitless through the opening two innings before the Titans struck the opening blow during the top of the third as right fielder Nataly Lozano singled with two down to plate center fielder Kate Verhoef.
Offensively, Cal Poly stranded a runner on third to close the first inning and two more to end the third. The Mustangs twice hit into inning-ending double plays to snap rallies in the second and fourth innings before once again leaving two on to cap the sixth.
The Titans completed the scoring in the fifth as catcher Alexia Lopez scored shortstop Sarah Perez with a one-out sacrifice fly.
In the circle for Cal Poly, Judy sustained the loss after conceding both Cal State Fullerton runs and five hits. Bermudez, meanwhile, produced two singles to lead the Mustangs.
During Saturday's second matchup, Cal State Fullerton took the lead at its first opportunity before doubling the advantage in the second as Lozano and designated player Sophia Guevara provided successive sacrifice flies.
With Cal Poly once more hitting into inning-ending double plays to end the first and second innings, first baseman Ava Arce furthered Cal State Fullerton's lead to 4-0 during the third with a two-run homer to right center.
The Titans then added another run in the fourth and four unearned runs in the fifth to place the matchup in run-rule territory.
With two singles, Erskine secured her fourth collegiate multi-hit game.
Cal Poly and Cal State Fullerton complete the three-game series with a 12 noon matchup on Sunday, March 23.
