Cal Poly’s Big West Championship Run Ends in Quarterfinals
3/13/2025 4:04:00 PM | Women's Basketball
HENDERSON, Nev. – Cal Poly women's basketball put together another solid performance at the quarterfinals of the Big West Championship Thursday against UC San Diego, leading for 38 minutes of the game but came up just short in the end, falling 59-54.
Three Mustangs scored double figures, led by senior guard Sidney Richards' 13 points and four assists. Senior guard Annika Shah finished her final collegiate game with 11 points and four rebounds. Redshirt sophomore forward Sierra Lichtie added 10 points, six assists, and six rebounds.
The Tritons were led by sophomore guard Sumayah Sugapong's 29 points and six steals, with 14 of those coming in the fourth quarter.
The Mustangs got off to a 9-2 start. Cal Poly continued to play strong all first quarter, leading it 17-9 heading into the second thanks to limiting the Tritons to 20 percent shooting in the opening quarter.
With Cal Poly leading 21-11 in the second, UC San Diego scored seven straight to get within four. The Mustangs then extended their lead back up to 11 after a 7-0 run with three minutes left in the half. Cal Poly led at halftime by nine, 33-24.
A four-minute scoring drought by the Mustangs midway through the third quarter allowed the Tritons to get back within two, 37-35. Cal Poly held them off the rest of the quarter, taking a 40-37 lead into the fourth.
With Cal Poly up by one with seven minutes left, the defense dug in and held UC San Diego without a point for over three minutes as the Mustangs went up 50-45. A Triton layup with two minutes left cut Cal Poly's lead down to 52-51. They then made a layup on their next possession to take a 53-52 lead.
Sydney Bourland gave Cal Poly the lead back with 45 seconds left with a bucket in the paint. Sugapong then scored with 39 seconds to play to put the Tritons up one.
Shah had an open look from three on Cal Poly's next possession but was just off the mark. The Tritons then made a pair of free throws to go up by three with 16 seconds left. The Mustangs came up short on their next two possessions and were unable to tie it back up.
Despite the loss, the Mustangs still had a strong season under third year head coach Shanele Stires. They won the program's first game in the Big West Championship since 2021 and had double digit wins for the third straight season.
There will be big shoes to fill with this outgoing senior class that is very individually decorated. The team will lose seniors Annika Shah, Sydney Bourland, Sidney Richards, and Ashley Hiraki. All four had phenomenal collegiate careers, with Shah ranking eighth in program history in career points and Bourland ranking in the top 20 in both rebounds and steals.
