SAN LUIS OBISPO – Junior third baseman Mylina Garza's sixth-inning, run-scoring double tied the Cal Poly softball program's Friday afternoon season opener against Oregon State, but the Beavers scored three times in the seventh to best the hosts at the 2025 Mustang Classic, 4-1. Cal Poly also fell in Friday's second game in eight innings against Ball State, 3-2.
During Friday's season opener against Oregon State, Cal Poly starting righthander Paige Maier (0-1) kept the Beavers (1-1) hitless and faced just one hitter over the minimum through the opening four innings. The Beavers, however, broke onto the scoreboard during the top of the fifth with right fielder Nicole Donahue singling to open the inning. Three batters later and with two down, left fielder Morgan Howey tripled down the right field line to plate Donahue.
Stranding a runner on third to close the fifth, Cal Poly (0-2) struck back during the sixth as Garza followed senior catcher Julia Barnett's leadoff double with a run-scoring double of her own to tie the matchup.
Oregon State, however, found the winning runs during the top half of the seventh, scoring three times without reply in the 4-1 decision.
During Friday's second matchup versus Ball State (2-0), Cal Poly starting senior righthander Kate Judy struck out four Cardinals through the opening four innings while keeping Ball State to just two hits. In the top of the sixth, however, Ball State placed two on with one down before Judy gave way to righthander Bree Brennan. The freshman walked shortstop McKenna Mulholland to load the bases before a wild pitch brought home left fielder Kara Gunter for a 1-0 Ball State lead.
The Mustangs, however, equalized at the first opportunity, utilizing a Ball State fielding error and two singles to load the bases. Freshman second baseman Aly Barrios then drew a bases-loaded walk to force home sophomore right fielder A'Niyla Byrd for a 1-1 deadlock.
In the bottom of the seventh, Cal Poly placed two on with two outs, but Garza was thrown out at home by Cardinals center fielder Grace Spencer to end the regulation innings.
With the international tiebreaker rule in effect to start the eighth, Ball State produced the eventual winning runs with two outs through third baseman Mandy Lauth's two-run single to short left field.
Cal Poly grabbed one run back during the bottom of the eighth with a groundout from junior center fielder Kiara Blanchard plating senior first baseman Malia Mah. With two down, however, Ball State reliever Brinkley Kita (1-0) struck out Mustang freshman pinch hitter Alannah Tuua with a runner on third.
