Mustangs Fall to Utah in Weekend Finale

LOS ANGELES — Sophomore Wian Roothman won his match in singles, but Cal Poly men's tennis fell to Utah 4-1 Saturday in a neutral site match in Los Angeles.
Cal Poly battled in doubles, just missing out on it by a few points. Cal Poly's No. 3 duo of junior Aaron Eliscu and sophomore Sean Ferguson started off by winning their match 6-3.
The Mustangs' other two doubles pairs both came up just short as both lost in a tiebreaker 6-7. Raz Haviv and Sean Kamyshev lost their tiebreaker 7-2 while Bastiaan Weststrate and John Cross lost theirs 7-2.
In singles, Roothman won at the No. 6 spot in straight sets 6-4, 7-5 to earn him his first career singles victory and get Cal Poly on the board.
However, Utah won at the three of the other singles spots: No. 1, No. 2, and No. 5 in straight sets to clinch the victory.
Cal Poly will return home for two matches next week at Ronca Tennis Center. They will first host BYU Friday, Feb. 21 at 6 p.m. followed by Idaho on Sunday, Feb. 23 at 10 a.m.
