Haviv, Cross Win but Mustangs Fall to BYU in Historic Night Match

SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. — Sophomore Raz Haviv and freshman John Cross both won their singles under the lights during the Cal Poly men's tennis program's first ever night match at Ronca Tennis Center Thursday. However, the Mustangs fell to Power 4 opponent BYU by a score of 5-2.
The Cougars started off the match taking the doubles point after winning at the No. 1 and No. 3 spots to go up 1-0.
In singles, BYU won the first four matches to go up 5-0. However, Cal Poly finished strong as Haviv and Cross both battled to collect wins.
At the No. 4 spot, Cross had a dominant second set on his way to winning 7-6(4), 6-2. He has now won his last two matches. Then at the No. 1 spot, Haviv had a gritty straight sets win over Wally Thayne, 7-5, 7-6(5).
The Mustangs will look to bounce back Sunday when they host the University of Idaho at 10 a.m. at Ronca Tennis Center.
