SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. — In a battle of a match that came down to three set matches at the end, Cal Poly men's tennis came out on top of Idaho 4-3 Sunday at Ronca Tennis Center.
The Mustangs' No. 3 doubles pair of Aaron Eliscu and Sean Ferguson won their match 6-1. The No. 1 Cal Poly duo of Raz Haviv and Sean Kamyshev then secured the doubles point after they won 6-1.
In singles, Cal Poly quickly jumped out to a 3-0 lead after wins by sophomore Sean Ferguson at the No. 6 spot, 6-0, 6-3, and freshman Jack McGary at the No. 5 spot, 6-3, 6-4.
Idaho then picked up wins at the No. 2 and No. 1 spots to make it 3-2. Needing to win one of the two remaining matches, freshman John Cross pulled off a three set comeback victory at the No. 4 spot.
After dropping the first set 6-7, Cross bounced back to win the second 6-3 and third 6-4 to secure the victory for Cal Poly. Cross has now won his last three singles matches.
The Mustangs will now embark on a three match road trip that takes them down to San Diego where they will face San Diego State on Wednesday, Nevada on Thursday, and UC San Diego on Sunday for their Big West opener.
