Weststrate Collects Fifth Singles Win but Mustangs Fall to San Diego State

SAN DIEGO — Senior Bastiaan Weststrate earned his fifth singles win of the season, but the Cal Poly men's tennis team came up just short on the road at San Diego State Wednesday, 4-1.
Cal Poly battled in the doubles point and just missed out on taking it over the Aztecs. San Diego State won at the No. 1 spot 6-2 to start. Cal Poly's No. 3 duo of Aaron Eliscu and Sean Ferguson took San Diego State's pair to a tiebreaker but came up just short 7-6(5).
At the time the Aztecs clinched the doubles point, the Mustangs' No. 2 duo of Weststrate and freshman John Cross were leading their match 6-5.
In singles, four of the six matches went to three sets. The Aztecs took a 3-0 lead after straight sets wins at the No. 6 and No. 3 spots.
Weststrate then won his match in three sets at the No. 2 spot, 3-6, 6-3, 6-2. At the No. 1 spot, sophomore Raz Haviv battled but fell in three sets, 7-6(2), 0-6, 6-4 which resulted in San Diego State sealing its 4-1 victory.
When the match finished, both Cross and freshman Jack McGary were in third sets in their matches.
Cal Poly will get right back at it Thursday in San Diego as the Mustangs will face Nevada in a neutral site match at 2 p.m. at Aztec Tennis Center.
