SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. — Led by senior guard Annika Shah's three point barrage, Cal Poly women's basketball got back in the winning column Thursday with a 61-56 victory at home over UC San Diego.
Shah poured in a career high 27 points, going 7-8 from three, also a career high. Shah, the Big West leading three point shooter, also posted five assists and five rebounds. Sophomore forward Mary Carter added 15 points on an efficient 6-11 shooting in addition to eight rebounds and three blocks.
As a team, the Mustangs shot 46 percent from the field and 53 percent from three for the game. UC San Diego had three players score in double figures and despite drawing a lot of fouls, they were just 7-17 from the free throw line.
Midway through the second quarter, The Mustangs (7-8, 2-3 Big West) looked to be running away with it after going up 16-8. The Tritons (6-10, 2-2 Big West) then went on a 13-1 run to take a 21-17 lead. Cal Poly finished the half strong with a 9-4 run that was capped by a layup at the buzzer by freshman Nora Perez to give Cal Poly a 26-25 advantage at the break.
A close, back-and-forth third saw UCSD leading by one heading into the fourth. Cal Poly's offense then exploded in the fourth with 21 points. With the Mustangs leading 50-48 midway through the quarter, Cal Poly scored seven unanswered points to go up by nine with about five minutes left.
With just over a minute to go and the Mustangs up 59-52, the Tritons knocked down a three and later a free throw to get back within three with 40 seconds left. Cal Poly's defense and free throw making then shut the door on UCSD.
Cal Poly will now make the trip down to rival UCSB to face the Gauchos Saturday. Tip time inside the Thunderdome is set for 4 p.m. with the game airing on ESPN+.
