SAN LUIS OBISPO – After earning his fourth career shutout during the Cal Poly men’s soccer program’s 2-0, Blue-Green rivalry home victory against No. 13 UC Santa Barbara (Sept. 28), junior goalkeeper Nicky McCune was named Big West Defensive Player of the Week for a second time this season on Monday afternoon.
Asked to make just a solitary fifth-minute save against the Gauchos in front of 9,657 fans at Mustang Memorial Field at Spanos Stadium, McCune helped lift Cal Poly to its first rivalry win against the Gauchos since 2018 and the program’s first victory against a ranked opponent since 2019.
Having conceded just one goal from open play in his last 446 minutes, McCune now ranks 43rd among NCAA Division I goalkeepers with a 0.89 goals against average. He’s also third in the Big West with a .758 save percentage and 806 minutes played.
As a program, Cal Poly opens its 23rd season of Big West action at UC Davis on Wednesday, Oct. 2 (3 p.m.) before visiting UC Santa Barbara on Sunday, Oct. 6 on ESPNU at 4 p.m.
