Mustangs Drop 2-0 Sunday Decision at Saint Mary’s

MORAGA – First-half goals from Saint Mary's forwards Wade Muttitt and Jude Zamora marked the difference Sunday afternoon as the Cal Poly men's soccer program sustained its first setback of the season with a 2-0 away loss to the Gaels.
Junior goalkeeper Nicky McCune chalked up a pair of saves for Cal Poly (0-1-1), which outshot Saint Mary's (1-1-0), 10-7, and forced Gaels goalkeeper Sam Bentley into three saves. However, Muttitt struck nine minutes after the kickoff and Zamora doubled the host's lead in the 28th to help hand Saint Mary's its first win of 2024.
Cal Poly enjoyed five first-half shot attempts with junior defender Nico Baltazar turned away by Bentley on 14 minutes. Into the second half, Mustangs junior midfielder Bakuena Ramakatsa was stopped in the 65th before Bentley preserved the shutout with an 89th-minute save from Cal Poly sophomore midfielder Jackson Miller (above).
McCune, meanwhile, kept the deficit at two goals by saving attempts from Muttitt in the 76th and 78th minutes.
Ramakatsa and freshman forward Armin Tehrani co-led Cal Poly with three shot attempts apiece.
Cal Poly continues and concludes its season-opening, four-match road trip when visiting Oral Roberts on Thursday, Aug. 29 at 6:15 p.m. PT and Tulsa on Sunday, Sept. 1 at 5 p.m. PT.
