Mustangs Sweep Friday Pair from UC Davis

SAN LUIS OBISPO – Sophomore righthander Sophia Ramuno (above) tossed a complete-game, two-hitter with five strikeouts Friday afternoon as the Cal Poly softball program opened a doubleheader and three-game series against UC Davis with a 1-0 triumph. Cal Poly completed the Friday sweep with a 4-2 win in game No. 2 as junior righthander Paige Maier went the distance in a four-hit effort while junior center fielder Jessica Clements belted her team leading fifth home run of the season.
With Friday's opening 1-0 victory, Cal Poly (24-17, 14-8) ensured its first winning mark since finishing 38-21 in 2017. The Mustangs complete their three-game series with UC Davis – and wrap up a 12-game home schedule for the 2024 season – with an 11 a.m. first pitch on Saturday, May 4.
During Friday's opening 1-0 victory, Cal Poly stranded senior right fielder Juju Sargent on third base to close the second and left two in scoring position to complete the third before the Mustangs produced the matchup's only run during the bottom half of the fifth. After drawing a one-out, full-count walk, senior first baseman Kai Barrett reached second through freshman second baseman Sehren Martinez's sacrifice bunt. Junior center fielder Jessica Clements then doubled down the left field line to plate Barrett for the 1-0 advantage.
In the circle for Cal Poly, Ramuno (10-10) conceded both UC Davis hits during the opening four innings with just one Aggies baserunner reaching as far as third in the matchup. She faced just one over the minimum during the final three innings, retiring UC Davis in order during the top halves of the fifth and seventh.
During Friday's second 4-2 victory, UC Davis (18-28, 9-14) took a 1-0 lead in the top half of the first inning with the Aggies executing a double steal that brough home catcher Anna Dethlefson.
Retired in order to close the first, Cal Poly took over the lead during the bottom half of the second. With Sargent on third and sophomore left fielder Kiara Blanchard on second and two down, a grounder off Barrett's bat was mishandled by UC Davis shortstop Libbie McMahan. The miscue plated both Mustangs as Cal Poly departed the second up 2-1.
Clements then increased Cal Poly's lead to 3-1 in the third with a home run over the right field wall to lead off the fourth. Cal Poly completed its scoring during the fourth, Blanchard coming around for a second time following a throwing error by UC Davis reliever Kenedi Brown.
After conceding a one-out double to UC Davis second baseman Marley Panziera in the second, Maier (6-2) retired 10 successive Aggies. UC Davis cut Cal Poly's lead to 4-2 in the sixth as left fielder Sarah Nakahara contributed a run-scoring sacrifice fly. Maier, however, retired UC Davis in order during the seventh to complete the matchup, finishing with four strikeouts against zero walks.
