Mustangs Take Friday Series Opener at UC San Diego, 7-1
5/10/2024 7:40:00 PM | Softball
LA JOLLA – Sophomore righthander Sophia Ramuno (above) struck out a career high 11 batters in a complete-game, five-hitter Friday evening as the Cal Poly softball program opened its final regular season series with a 7-1 victory against UC San Diego at Triton Softball Field.
The Mustangs (26-17, 16-8) – who clinched third place in the Big West standings with Friday's win – broke open a scoreless matchup in the top of the third inning, first loading the bases with one down before a fielder's choice from sophomore left fielder Kiara Blanchard plated senior shortstop Xiara Diaz. A two-run throwing error committed by Tritons shortstop Hailey Mulligan off a grounder by senior designated player Mia Perez followed before a sacrifice fly from sophomore third baseman Mylina Garza brought around Blanchard for a 4-0 advantage.
Cal Poly went up 5-0 in the fourth after senior right fielder Juju Sargent scored junior center fielder Jessica Clements with a single to left. Junior catcher Julia Barnett then completed Cal Poly's scoring in fifth with a two-run single to center field.
In the circle, Ramuno limited UC San Diego (16-33, 9-15) to just two hits through the opening five innings without letting a Tritons baserunner past first. UC San Diego, however, thwarted Ramuno's attempt for a third successive shutout in the sixth as Mulligan singled home second baseman Marissa Hassis.
Ramuno, who had twice struck out 10 batters earlier this season, bettered her career high Friday with at least one strikeout in every inning. She struck out the UC San Diego side to close the sixth.
During the top of the first, Barnett threw out her 19th would-be base stealer of the season, moving one shy of Monmouth's Abby Warner for the Division I lead.
Cal Poly completes the three-game series and the 2024 regular season on Saturday, May 11 with a 1 p.m. doubleheader.
