Cal Poly Completes Sweep of UCSD to Close 2024 Regular Season
5/11/2024 3:56:00 PM | Softball
LA JOLLA – Senior right fielder Juju Sargent (above) provided the eventual game-winning hit during the top of the sixth inning as the Cal Poly softball program closed the 2024 regular season, a three-game sweep of UC San Diego and a Saturday doubleheader with a 5-4 victory at Triton Softball Field. The Mustangs also took Saturday's opener from UC San Diego, 9-1.
With its sixth conference series win in nine opportunities and completing a fourth series sweep Saturday, Cal Poly (28-17, 18-8) closed the regular season third in the final Big West standings – its best finish since a runner-up showing in 2014. Cal Poly's 18 Big West victories matched a program record set in 2009 while the 28 overall wins marked the program's highest total since prevailing 38 times in 2017.
During Saturday's opening 9-1 victory, Cal Poly required just five pitches to take the game's only lead as senior shortstop Xiara Diaz followed a leadoff double by junior center fielder Jessica Clements with a run-scoring single up the middle. Two batters later, Sargent singled to plate Diaz before a wild pitch from Tritons starter Claire Adams (0-1) brought in junior catcher Julia Barnett. Cal Poly then ran the lead to 4-0 after Sargent scored from third on a failed pickoff attempt.
Cal Poly added a fifth run in the second inning as Barnett brought home senior catcher Kai Barrett with a sacrifice fly before a third-inning, bases-loaded walk drawn by Clements forced home sophomore left fielder Kiara Blanchard for a 6-0 advantage.
Staked to the lead before throwing a pitch, sophomore righthander Sophia Ramuno (13-10) – who finished with five strikeouts – conceded just four hits while allowing only one Tritons baserunner as far as third. Junior righthander Paige Maier took over to begin the fifth, conceding just two hits and UC San Diego's lone run in the sixth.
Defensively, Cal Poly turned double plays to end both the fourth and fifth innings.
The Mustangs completed the scoring with a three-run seventh, highlighted by a two-run Diaz single.
During Saturday's second 5-4 win, Cal Poly once again struck the opening blow in the top of the first with Sargent singling home Clements with two outs. The Mustangs doubled their lead in the second, Clements singling into center field to bring around sophomore third baseman Mylina Garza.
Making her third straight series start, Ramuno retired seven of the initial eight Tritons faced before UC San Diego halved Cal Poly's lead during the bottom of the third. With junior righthander Kate Judy taking over to begin the fourth, however, the Tritons then surged into a 4-2 lead with a three-run inning.
The Tritons, however, were undone in part by infield throwing errors in the top half of the fifth with the first miscue helping load the Cal Poly bases before the second brought in Blanchard and Sargent to tie the matchup at 4-4.
An inning later and with two Mustangs on and two down, Sargent singled to left center, scoring Clements for the 5-4 advantage.
Throwing the final three and one-third innings for Cal Poly, Maier set down UC San Diego in order to close the fifth and sixth. Conceding just a walk with two down in the seventh, Maier improved to 7-2 by striking Tritons third baseman Zoe Richards to end the matchup.
