Cal Poly Splits Saturday Pair at Hawai’i, Prevailing 6-5 in Game No. 2

HONOLULU, O'ahu – Junior center fielder Jessica Clements homered to lead off both the first and sixth innings during the Cal Poly softball program's series opener at Hawai'i – a matchup that began Friday evening, was halted by rain in the second inning and completed Saturday afternoon – but the Mustangs fell to the Rainbow Wahine, 3-2. Cal Poly, however, recovered to capture game No. 2, 6-5, utilizing a two-run homer from senior first baseman Kai Barrett (above) – a native of Waipahu, Hawaii – and a four-run fourth inning to square the shortened series.
During Saturday's opening 3-2 loss, Cal Poly (18-12, 8-3) trailed Hawai'i 2-1 when play was suspended Friday evening after rain descended on Rainbow Wahine Softball Stadium. Clements provided Cal Poly a 1-0 advantage after belting the third pitch from Hawai'i starting righthander Addison Kostrencich (7-6) over the left field wall before the Rainbow Wahine benefited from a Cal Poly throwing error in the bottom of the second to score twice.
With action resuming Saturday afternoon in the second, Hawai'i increased the lead to 3-1 in the third through second baseman Maya Nakamura's solo home run.
Limited to three hits through the opening five innings by Kostrencich, Cal Poly cut the deficit to 3-2 after Clements began the sixth with her team leading fourth homer of 2024. The Mustangs, however, were kept to just one baserunner the remainder of the matchup.
Despite tossing a complete-game, four-hitter with seven strikeouts, sophomore righthander Sophia Ramuno (7-7) sustained the loss for Cal Poly.
During Saturday's 6-5 victory against Hawai'i, Cal Poly took a 2-0 lead in the second after Barrett followed sophomore third baseman Mylina Garza's one-out single with a two-out, two-run homer to center field.
Returning to the circle to start game No. 2 for Cal Poly, Ramuno retired the first six Hawai'i hitters she faced before third baseman Ka'ena Keliinoi singled to lead off the third. Attempting a sacrifice bunt, left fielder Mya'Liah Bethea then reached after her grounder was mishandled by Ramuno, who set down the next two batters before second baseman Madixx Muramoto hit a three-run homer.
Cal Poly, however, regained the lead at the first opportunity, scoring four times in the fourth. Senior shortstop Xiara Diaz first tied the matchup with a sacrifice fly that plated junior pinch runner Jade Contapay. Sophomore left fielder Kiara Blanchard, Garza and junior catcher Julia Barnett all followed with run-scoring hits as the Mustangs took a 6-3 lead into the bottom of the fourth.
Hawai'i took two runs back in the bottom of the fifth, cutting its deficit to 6-5 after first baseman Dallas Millwood contributed a two-run single to left field.
Taking over in the circle for Ramuno following Muramoto's three-run homer, Cal Poly junior righthander Kate Judy (6-4) eventually earned the victory after throwing two innings of relief. Junior righthander Paige Maier entered the matchup with Cal Poly leading 6-5 and two down in the fifth before closing the game by keeping Hawai'i hitless during the final two and two-thirds innings.
With the backlogged schedule, the third game of the series – originally set for Saturday, April 6 at 7:30 p.m. PT – was cancelled and will not be rescheduled.
Cal Poly resumes action when visiting Cal State Bakersfield for a three-game, April 13-14 set. The series begins with a 12 noon doubleheader on Saturday, April 13.
