Mustangs Sweep Friday Doubleheader at Cal State Bakersfield
4/12/2024 2:31:00 PM | Softball
BAKERSFIELD – Sophomore righthander Sophia Ramuno struck out seven Cal State Bakersfield hitters in three innings and junior center fielder Jessica Clements (above) produced four RBI as the Cal Poly softball program opened both a Friday afternoon doubleheader and three-game road series against the Roadrunners with a 10-1, five-inning victory. The Mustangs then completed the Friday sweep in game No. 2, winning their seventh one-run conference matchup in 10 Big West victories with a 2-1 decision.
During Friday's opening 10-1, five-inning victory, Cal Poly (20-12, 10-3) produced all the runs required for victory with one down in the top of the first inning. After Clements and senior shortstop Xiara Diaz reached on successive Cal State Bakersfield errors to open the matchup, senior designated player Mia Perez delivered a two-run double. Senior right fielder Juju Sargent next plated Perez with a double to center field before scoring herself through an infield base hit from junior catcher Julia Barnett. After freshman second baseman Sehren Martinez singled to load the bags, Clements unloaded a bases-clearing double as the Mustangs departed the top of the first with a 7-0 advantage.
Handed the lead before throwing a pitch, Ramuno (8-7) retired the first six Roadrunners she faced while striking out the side to close both the second and third innings. She allowed just one hit before giving way to junior righthander Kate Judy in the fourth.
Kept scoreless during the second, Cal Poly pushed the lead to 9-0 in the third after senior first baseman Kai Barrett drew a two-out walk before Martinez singled and Clements reached on an error by Roadrunners second baseman Shaylene Fuimaono – a miscue that brought the scoreline into run-rule territory.
Cal State Bakersfield (4-32, 2-12) found its lone run in the bottom half of the fourth, third baseman Rylee Price singling to bring home shortstop Violet Salazar. Cal Poly, however, cancelled out the run in the fifth as Perez singled with two down to score Diaz.
During Friday's second victory, Cal Poly took the lead in the top of the first once again with Clements singling to lead off, stealing second, moving to third through a Perez fly out and scoring on a Roadrunners fielding error.
Cal State Bakersfield, however, required just an inning to equalize with Fuimaono following a one-out single by left fielder Hailey Brooks in the second with a run-scoring double.
Held hitless in the third by Cal State Bakersfield starting righthander Kirsten Martinez (2-6) and stranding two baserunners in the top of the fourth, Cal Poly found the decisive run in the fifth. Singling to lead off the inning, Diaz stole second before scoring after a pitch off the bat of sophomore Kiara Blanchard was mishandled by Brooks in left field.
In the circle for Cal Poly, Judy (7-4) took over for starting righthander Paige Maier with two down in the bottom of the second and limited the Roadrunners to three hits in two and two-thirds innings. Ramuno picked up her third save of the year by stranding solitary Roadrunners to close the fifth and sixth and setting down Cal State Bakersfield in order during the bottom of the seventh.
