Mustangs Finalize Sweep of Cal State Bakersfield with Four-Run Eighth
4/13/2024 2:09:00 PM | Softball
BAKERSFIELD – Junior pinch hitter Caroline Allman (above) delivered the eventual game-winning hit as part of a four-run, eighth inning for the Cal Poly softball program Saturday as the Mustangs completed a three-game sweep of Cal State Bakersfield with a 6-2 triumph at Roadrunner Softball Complex.
Tied 2-2 to close the seventh inning after Cal Poly (21-12, 11-3) had scored single runs in the top of the fifth and sixth and Cal State Bakersfield (4-32, 2-12) had equalized during the respective bottom halves, the Mustangs found the decisive runs in the top of the eighth. Singles from sophomore third baseman Mylina Garza and senior first baseman Kai Barrett placed Mustangs at the corner bases before Allman – in just her seventh conference at-bat of 2024 – produced the go-ahead run with a single to right field.
Junior center fielder Jessica Clements followed with a single that brought home Barrett. The Mustangs eventually loaded the bases in the inning with sophomore left fielder Kiara Blanchard drawing a walk to force home Allman. Senior Claire Early closed the four-run effort with a base hit that plated Clements.
Junior righthander Kate Judy (8-4) – taking over for starter Sophia Ramuno after Cal State Bakersfield scored its second run with one down in the sixth – earned Saturday's victory after keeping the Roadrunners hitless for the final two and two-thirds innings. Ramuno struck out six without a walk.
With Saturday's victory, Cal Poly moved within a half game of second place Long Beach State (17-24, 12-3) in the Big West standings. The Mustangs next host The Beach for a three-game, April 20-21 series.
Stranding four baserunners through the opening four innings Saturday, Cal Poly broke the scoreless deadlock during the top of the fifth as freshman shortstop Sehren Martinez singled with two down to bring home junior pinch runner Jade Contapay.
Cal State Bakersfield, however, equalized at the first opportunity. Reaching to lead off following a Cal Poly error, second baseman Logan-Ray Gaspar advanced to second through a sacrifice bunt and third on a groundout before catcher Maya Molina-Villarreal produced a run-scoring sacrifice fly.
Cal Poly surged ahead once more in the sixth as Barrett singled with two down to bring home senior right fielder Juju Sargent for a 2-1 advantage. The Roadrunners though answered again in the bottom half of the sixth as designated player Karissa Munsey followed a leadoff double by right fielder Maya Williams with a run-scoring two-bagger of her own.
