4/20/2024 3:48:00 PM | Softball
SAN LUIS OBISPO – Sophomore righthander Sophia Ramuno tossed a complete-game, three-hitter with seven strikeouts and sophomore left fielder Kiara Blanchard (above) delivered the eventual game-winning single during the bottom half of the fourth inning as the Cal Poly softball program opened a three-game series with Long Beach State and a Saturday doubleheader with a 2-0 triumph. Cal Poly, however, fell in game No. 2, 3-2, trailing from the onset after Long Beach State scored twice in the top of the first inning.
With Saturday's split, Cal Poly (22-13, 12-4) remained in third place in the Big West standings, but stayed just one half-game behind Long Beach State (18-25, 13-4). After prevailing twice earlier on Saturday at UC Santa Barbara, Big West leader Cal State Fullerton (29-14, 15-2) increased its lead over Long Beach State to two games.

During Saturday's opening 2-0 victory, Long Beach State starting lefthander Sophia Fernandez (9-11) retired the Mustangs in order the first time through the lineup before junior center fielder Jessica Clements broke up the perfect game with a leadoff triple to begin the bottom of the fourth. Two batters later, Blanchard placed Cal Poly in front with a single into center field.
The Mustangs then doubled the lead an inning later as junior catcher Julia Barnett followed a leadoff single by sophomore third baseman Mylina Garza with a run-scoring double off the wall in left center field.
In the circle for Cal Poly, Ramuno (9-7) conceded two Long Beach State hits through the first five spots in the lineup and just one more the remainder of the matchup. She stranded nine total Long Beach State baserunners, including two in scoring position during the third and another at third in the sixth. The Big West's strikeout leader, Ramuno closed the game by fanning Long Beach State center fielder Makayla Medellin with the bases loaded.
During Saturday's second matchup, Long Beach State opened the scoring during the top of the first inning as Medellin produced a one-out, run-plating double before scoring herself through a Mustang fielding error.
Cal Poly stranded the bases loaded to close the first before halving Long Beach State's lead during the second. With junior Jade Contapay on to run after Barnett reached through a Long Beach State throwing error, Clements delivered a run-scoring single up the middle to provide Cal Poly a 2-1 deficit.
Following the Clements hit, however, Long Beach State starting righthander Kate Barnett (5-3) retired 12 successive Mustangs, setting down Cal Poly in order to close the third, fourth and fifth innings. In the sixth, however, Cal Poly loaded the bases with one down to force Barnett from the circle. Long Beach State lefthanded reliever Mo Quinlan unfurled a wild pitch against Cal Poly catcher Kai Barrett, a miscue that plated junior pinch runner Caroline Allman. Quinlan, however, recovered to strand the Mustang bases loaded and keep Long Beach State's lead at 3-2.
Cal Poly then stranded its ninth and final baserunner on first during the bottom of the seventh to complete the matchup.
