FULLERTON – A five-run, fifth inning by Big West leader Cal State Fullerton broke open a scoreless matchup Sunday afternoon at Anderson Family Field as the Cal Poly softball program closed a three-game series with a 6-0 setback.
Cal Poly starting sophomore righthander Sophia Ramuno (9-10) limited Cal State Fullerton to three hits through the initial four innings, allowing just one baserunner as far as third. Cal State Fullerton pinch hitter Candace Yingling left off the bottom of the fifth with a single, however, and – two batters later – left fielder Bailey Wallace delivered a run-scoring double to left center. Third baseman Hannah Becerra later added a two-run double before designated player Ava Arce completed the scoring with a two-run homer for a 5-0 advantage.
Cal Poly twice stranded two baserunners in an inning prior to Cal State Fullerton's five-run effort, including during the top of the fifth after senior first baseman Kai Barrett drew a leadoff walk and senior shortstop Xiara Diaz singled with two down. Titans reliever Staci Chambers (15-5), however, forced a groundout from junior catcher Julia Barnett to end the threat.
Titans right fielder Mia Weckel led off the bottom of the sixth with a homer to complete the scoring.
Senior right fielder Juju Sargent (above) finished with two of Cal Poly's four hits Sunday.
Cal Poly (22-17, 12-8) resumes play when hosting UC Davis May 3-4 for its final home series of 2024. Action gets underway with a 1 p.m. doubleheader on Friday, May 3.
