Mustangs Fall Twice Saturday at Big West Leader Cal State Fullerton

FULLERTON – Cal State Fullerton first baseman Kika Ramirez's walk-off single with two down in the bottom of the seventh decided Saturday afternoon's series opener as the Cal Poly softball program – despite twice leading the Titans – dropped the first game of a doubleheader, 6-5. Cal Poly also fell in Saturday's second game, 7-1, trailing from the onset after a three-run Cal State Fullerton first inning.
With Saturday's pair of defeats, Cal Poly (22-16, 12-7) slipped four-and-a-half games behind Big West leader Cal State Fullerton (31-15, 17-3) with seven regular season matchups remaining. The Mustangs and Titans complete their three-game series on Sunday, April 28 at 1 p.m. on ESPN+.
During Saturday's opening 6-5 setback, Cal Poly faced a 3-2 deficit heading into the top of the sixth. With two Mustangs on and two down, junior center fielder Jessica Clements beat out an infield grounder to load the bases for senior shortstop Xiara Diaz (above), who delivered a two-run single to left that brought home senior first baseman Kai Barrett and freshman pinch runner A'Niyla Byrd for a 4-3 advantage.
Cal State Fullerton returned in the bottom half of the sixth to load the bases with two down against Cal Poly starting sophomore righthander Sophia Ramuno (9-9). Ramuno, however, forced an inning-ending flyout from second baseman Colby McClinton.
Cal Poly furthered its lead to 5-3 in the top of the seventh as sophomore third baseman Mylina Garza plated junior pinch hitter Caroline Allman with a sacrifice fly. The Titans, however, placed runners on first and second with two down during the bottom half. Titans third baseman Hannah Becerra first tied the matchup with a bases-clearing double before scoring after Ramirez's infield single.
Cal Poly produced the matchup's opening runs during the top of the second, loading the bags without an out before a grounder off the bat of freshman second baseman Sehren Martinez was mishandled by Becerra on an attempted force out. The dropped catch allowed Cal Poly senior right fielder Juju Sargent to score from third and Clements followed with a run-scoring sacrifice fly to plate pinch runner Jade Contapay for the 2-0 advantage.
Ramuno, meanwhile, conceded just two hits through the opening four innings while allowing just one Titans baserunner as far as second (Mustangs junior catcher Julia Barnett twice threw out baserunners during the bottom of the third).
Cal State Fullerton designated player Ava Arce, however, doubled to lead off the bottom half of the fifth. Shortstop Peyton Toto followed with a single to place Titans at the corner bases before Ramuno unfurled a wild pitch that brought in pinch runner Kristalyn Romulo. Four pitches later, McClinton swatted just her second home run of the season over the left center field wall to hand Cal State Fullerton a 3-2 lead.
During Saturday's second 7-1 defeat, Cal Poly was retired in order during the top half of the first and Cal State Fullerton went up 3-0 in the bottom after Ramirez hit a three-run homer.
The Titans then added single runs during the second and fourth innings to increase the lead to 5-0.
Held to one hit through the opening five innings by Cal State Fullerton starter Staci Chambers (15-5), the Mustangs notched their lone run during the top of the sixth as Barnett followed a one-out single from sophomore left fielder Kiara Blanchard with a run-scoring double.
The Titans, however, completed the scoring with two more runs in the bottom of the sixth.
