Cal Poly Drops Series Finale to UC Santa Barbara, 5-1

SAN LUIS OBISPO – Sophomore righthander Sophia Ramuno added six strikeouts to her Big West leading total, but the Cal Poly softball program never led during Friday afternoon's series finale against UC Santa Barbara and fell at Bob Janssen Field, 5-1.
UC Santa Barbara (11-19, 5-4), defeated twice Thursday by Big West leading Cal Poly (17-11, 7-2), opened Friday's scoring during the top of the second inning. With the Gauchos utilizing a walk and Mustang throwing error to place runners at the corner bases with one down, UC Santa Barbara left fielder Madelyn McNally plated shortstop Tehya Banks with a fielder's choice.
The Gauchos then doubled the lead in the third with right fielder Alexa Sams singling to bring in designated player Ainsley Waddell.
Offensively, Cal Poly was kept to just one hit and without a baserunner past second through the opening three innings by Gauchos starting righthander Camryn Snyder (4-4).
However, infield singles from senior shortstop Xiara Diaz and sophomore left fielder Kiara Blanchard (above) to open the bottom of the fourth placed Mustangs at the corner bases before senior designated player Mia Perez drew a walk to load the bags. Snyder then walked sophomore first baseman Mylina Garza on four pitches to force home Diaz, but the Mustangs left the bases loaded to close the inning and their best scoring opportunity of the afternoon.
UC Santa Barbara then ran the lead to 5-1 in the fifth with Sams, pinch hitter Alana Snow and third baseman Bella Fuentes each delivering run-scoring singles.
Cal Poly resumes action when visiting Hawai'i for a three-game, April 5-6 series. Play begins with an 8 p.m. PT matchup on Friday, April 5.
